Arriving in a new country can feel overwhelming, with everything familiar replaced by uncertainty. This was the experience of Thusanli, who transformed those challenges into motivation to support others seeking connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Thusanli shares more:

My name is Dr. Thusanli Upendran, and I am an asylum seeker living in Scotland. When I first arrived, I had no Tamil community around me and no one to help me understand how to settle into a new country. That experience inspired me to create Scotland Tamils Raise so that others would not have to face the same challenges alone.

Tamils are an ancient ethnic group with a long cultural history, and many of us have become part of a global diaspora because of conflict and human rights abuses. Arriving in a new country can be overwhelming, especially when you are far from home. I wanted to build a space where Tamil families, asylum seekers, and young people could feel supported while they integrate into Scottish society.

Scotland Tamils Raise helps people overcome isolation, language barriers, and the confusion of navigating life in a new place. Integration is about belonging, and we create opportunities for people to build friendships, gain confidence, and participate in the wider community. We collaborate with local organisations and host events that bring people together in positive and meaningful ways.

Our annual cricket tournaments have been especially successful. They attract players and spectators from across Scotland and create a friendly environment where people from different backgrounds can meet and connect. Cricket has become a bridge that promotes teamwork, inclusion, and community spirit.

Our cultural activities also help children and young people learn about Tamil traditions and language while giving Scottish neighbours a chance to understand our heritage. We encourage volunteering and support charitable causes, which helps our members feel more connected to Scotland and confident in giving back.

For me, Scotland Tamils Raise is a community built on unity, culture, and service. I want every Tamil arriving in Scotland to know they have people they can rely on and a place where they feel valued. As we grow, we hope to reach more families, create more opportunities for young people, and build partnerships that strengthen both the Tamil community and Scottish society.
