We wanted to run an International Street Food Festival in Dumfries in Spring 2022. The intention was to demonstrate the way that our area benefits from the arrival of people from different cultures and backgrounds. We wanted to use a mix of community groups and commercial food sellers and as wide a variety of different cuisines as possible.

By encouraging sharing of all kinds of cultures we hope that people will see themselves, from whatever area they started, as part of a rich and diverse community. We encouraged people to go beyond sharing a space and food to sit down and engage with each other and we know that a relaxed social event has been the most successful way to do this from past events.

Situation

We conducted an intensive research project into the experiences of the families in coming here to Dumfries and Galloway. We have already seen evidence that whilst largely confident in the support they receive from local services and in the structure of our society the families miss the sense of being part of a larger community which they previously felt.  To some degree they may be missing a community which does not currently exist here.

Impact

The Dumfries International Street Food Festival held on 5th June 2022 was a huge success in terms of numbers attending and the opportunity for people from a number of different ethnic backgrounds to meet together and provide a wide range of different foods.

The food festival was extremely successful in its own right in bringing together people from many different cultures to share food and enjoy a lovely inclusive day.

The planned activities over and above providing food were in retrospect extremely ambitious and would have required considerably more resources around the commissioned events manager and from MOOL volunteers.

Challenges encountered

The envisaged scale and complexity of the project was too ambitious and challenging. Any future such festival would require to look at scale and resources, to ensure that a larger number of food stalls and entertainments were available.
